The Master Speaks
Today’s Teaching:
In the last July newsletter, we discussed true Shaolin students’ leadership characters. We shall further discuss the key leadership traits required to run a business or lead a team.
The leadership character demonstrates one’s ability to listen and explore another person’s view without sticking to one’s winner seeking mentality.
We, as Kungfu SWAT/leadership team members must acquire the aptitude in synergy to communicate with efficiency and compassion to constantly reconnect our actions with our mission so as to empower and enlighten everyone around us.
We ask questions, when we listen with full attention, to explore and appreciate the other person, to break down any conflict, and open up to the issue at its core. By exploring, we further communicate from our hearts and minds and demonstrate that we care about the other person’s view and care about reaching a compatible solution. We convey our original intention with compassion. This is the characteristics of LEAP communication: listen, explore, appreciate and present.
Appreciation
After listening and questioning by exploring with full attention, we show our appreciation to tell the other person that his/her message is as important as ours. Showing appreciation for another person’s view is also sending a message of respect. When we appreciate the other person from his/her perspective, we are seeking a compatible solution that conveys a subtle acknowledgement of what has been said. This helps both sides to break down any barriers that might be present and paves the way for a harmonious and more desirable outcome. Once we are satisfied that we have asked enough questions to understand and appreciate the others’ points of view and then we can present our view with conviction and truth.
Present
After having been engaged in truthful listening, genuine exploration and empathetic appreciation we are poised to present our view with authentic, enlightening presence. Now we have earned the trust of the person we communicate with and we can obtain extraordinary results with Right Speech.
By the LEAP communication, we demonstrate genuine kindness and non-confrontational discussions or simple heart to heart tête-à-tête (dialogue). Our communication with compassion expresses the fact that we are speaking from the highest consciousness. When we examine the raw truth of our thoughts; we choose each word and sentence more precisely. Every word we use to express our feelings, thoughts and messages will ultimately affect the outcome of the situation. We shall immediately see and appreciate the different conditions we create with our speech. Observing this pattern helps us to streamline our visions with honest clarity, and communication becomes more effective. As we quarry into our wellspring of inner wisdom and compassion, our communication begins to change. Our words begin to ignite our actions that follow. By acknowledging that we’ve both heard and understood the other person’s point of view, synergy becomes possible and we become part of the solution.
Let’s exercise Mindful Awareness in LEAP communication. The following is leadership team’s home work you must send back to me before January. Please write a paragraph or an essay after reading the speech using the questions provided below:
- Think of a difficult communication issue and a person with whom to have the discussion.
- Think about listening with compassion.
- Develop questions that will explore and engage others.
- Ask questions unraveling any confusion and ultimately getting to the heart of the conflict.

Topics and training will include body and mind toughening the Shaolin way, Chan (Zen) meditation, Qi Healing and conditioning with special emphasis on internal Shaolin compassionate Mind and Spirit ,Qi development; traditional Qigong internal forms; authentic Shaolin forms, applications, Shaolin self-defense maneuvers & weapons; and Shaolin combat self protection techniques.
Apart from the many hours a day training, student education will be rounded out with trainings and visits to the infamous Shaolin Temple, Pagoda Forest, and climbs to the top of Yellow Mountain, the world’s famous Great Wall of China. There will be private dinners with internationally recognized martial artists, calligraphy artists, painters etc., along with tours to the city of Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Zheng Zhou and the Yellow Mountain, the most famous mountain of China.
Description of 2010 China Trip:
In a rare opportunity, nine students from the Norcross GA and New Orleans LA campuses of LIU International Shi Deru Shaolin Institute arrived at Shaolin Training Camp in the Shaolin Temple along with students from India, Italy, Hungary, and China to study with 31st generation Grand Masters of the Shaolin Temple, Shi De Yang and his Brother Shi Deru (Shawn Liu).
“The trip made it clear to me that martial arts are more than a tradition which has provided meaningful contribution to the physical development of humanity over thousands of years. Our Shifu (teaching father) has opened an extraordinary door to effective mind – body integration; I will never be the same. Though the experience was Shaolin tough just as you would expect, the China experience was also filled with exceptional cultural exchanges and royal treatments one would never find on a tour – it does not get better than this” said Georgia Gromov, a student at the Atlanta campus.
Undefeated during his Sanda Kickboxing career in China, in its 6 series documentary about Shi Deru CCTV Networks described Shi Deru as “The Shaolin Legendary Master and the Father of Sanda in America.” You will find him seated on the dais with all the great Masters of the world at international events. It is rare to find a Grand Master of the Shaolin Temple living and teaching outside China. With Grand Master Deru living in the Atlanta area, the community has the good fortune to lay claim to exceptional educational opportunities. The Norcross based institute attracts local residents and internationally recognized athletes from around the world who arrive to further their studies with Grand Master Deru in Martial Arts and a deeper level in ancient wisdom of the Shaolin Culture, its arts, philosophy and Zen living.

Dr. E. Lee Saffold, says:
The recent “Qi Retreat” in Pensacola, Florida conducted by Master Deru, the 31st generation descendent and a direct disciple of the late great Grand Master of the Shaolin temple, Suxi, was empowering as well as enlightening. Just to get away from regular daily work and focus entirely upon self-discovery and improvement was an experience that simply must be repeated by anyone interested in good physical, mental and spiritual health.
This retreat provided three primary benefits that I am convinced would be of great value to anyone seeking to live a quiet, peaceful, and productive life. (1) Learning the power of effective meditation. The value of silently turning your thoughts inward and detaching one’s self from any emotions, mental attachments or desires and simply “be” in the present tense with no past or future to regret or fear is a tremendous stress relief. (2) Understanding all of the various “energies” that are cultivated by a combination of physical movements of the body connected with controlled breathing and guided by the mind. These exercises, when done properly and regularly tend to improve one’s physical state while simultaneously developing the strength and capability of one’s mind. (3) Learning the ancient exercises of the Yi Jin Jing and Tai Gong along with some movements and martial applications of both Tai Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kung Fu from a master with a direct linage connection to the Shaolin Temple where they originated thousands of years ago and continue to be practiced today.
Through the expert teaching and guidance of Master Deru, it was abundantly clear that these ancient Chinese exercises of Shaolin Yi Jin Jing, Shaolin Tai Gong, and Tai Chi Chuan are effective to strengthen the entire human being, including body, mind and spirit. The exhilarating feeling of being completely relaxed, poised, confident as well as being physically and mentally refreshed after practicing these exercises for the greater part of three days was more than sufficient evidence to each participant that these exercises promise to be the very best means of maintaining a high degree of health for a lifetime. From Master Deru we learned how these exercises could help boost the immune system, improve oxygenation of the entire body, offer cardiovascular benefits, and improve blood circulation and respiratory function, relieve stress and increase one’s balance. I am convinced that all of these benefits will tend to prolong a quality life well into old age for persons who also maintain a healthy diet.
I highly recommend that everyone concerned with good health attend this Qi seminar with Master Deru at their earliest opportunity to learn these ancient methods of exercise with the intention to make them a daily practice. Harmony of mind and body with all that surrounds and affects us is the ultimate goal of those seeking peace and quality of life. This kind of knowledge is “like eating a peach”; the best way to understand the taste of a peach is to “eat one.” The best way to understand the benefits of these exercises tending toward a harmonious life is to do learn and practice them.
Sincerely,
E. Lee Saffold
From Keisuke Yamane, a former private middle school principal now working for the city government and also a Liu Institute instructor, says:
Thank you so much for letting me attend the retreat. I feel definitely refreshed and renewed both mentally and physically. I learned something new, and I need to work to retain them as much as possible. I really enjoyed the food. I would like to know how to prepare them so that I can cook myself. Hard work and effort to help the school is the way I can pay you back at this point.
Vatsana Chanthala, a public health advocate, says:
Shi Fu, thank you for all your time, patience and dedication to the health of this humble student. The Qi Gong weekend retreat gave me many important life’s lessons that will be cherished and passed on. I was reminded that healing takes time and comes from within. In the end, it all comes down to each and every one of us to being responsible for our own health. Doctors, nurses, or pills are all tools to help guide us in the right path in our quest for health improvement, not a crutch to take with us for the full journey. The Qi Gong exercises helped me to re-center and refocus my energy.
As I watched the full moon rise over the ocean, I felt a sense of renewed energy and peace. Each breath in was rejuvenating energy replacing existing burdens in each breath out.
I will forever remember you saying, “I’ll point the way, you walk the path, but don’t look at my finger.” I will continue to walk, but will need to look back once in a while, so please continue to point.
Thank you for an enlightening and empowering weekend.

The Shaolin spirit is something that cannot be defined easily in our modern society. It cannot be explained away with concrete words and definitions. But it does exist, nonetheless, in each and every one of us, and it is cultivated through our training in the Kung Fu discipline. Through the enlightenment of Chan, we become better balanced individuals by strengthening and tuning our body, mind, and spirit. This is hard work, and therefore it does not come easily. Initially, our training has a selfish focus, aiming to cultivate an inner sense of calm, strength, and balance. This goal to become a better individual eventually surpasses our own spirit and begins to enlighten our surrounding society. These are all necessary building blocks, because the intrinsic motivation to work hard and be patient must be present to carry us through this challenging journey. Satisfaction with our hard work, and the product of this work, becomes a way of life which produces healthy and happy Qi, which in turn connects to the quantum energy that flows throughout the earth between all men. Lack of human spirit is sometimes seen as a disease of modern society. I’ve been under the influence of Chinese modern education for over 20 years, and it seems like people have almost forgotten the foundation of the human spirit. Some focus only on money, forgetting the true relationship between people, and losing trust between each other. I have a feel that traditional Chinese culture is almost on the verge of dying. I believe it is time for people to get back to the basic human spirit. Read Full »

My understanding of Shaolin Spirit is simply the idea of constant self-awareness and self-development which can allow us to reach a point of enlightenment and freedom. By becoming self-aware and by consistently improving myself, I can help myself, my family, my community and society in general. If every individual were to consistently strive to improve themselves, society would be in a totally different situation from it is now. With an innate motivation to be a better person, society would have a significantly more harmonious outlook on the simplest things. Read Full »

I feel like people have forgotten what is truly important. It seems that today people only care about what they want in terms of material possessions. What is important can’t actually be bought with money. When one discovers true self in life, he/she always finds sufficiency in both spiritual and material life. However, today, people have too much desire in the material world. They have lost nature. Read Full »

Shifu says that “Shaolin spirit is to cultivate ourselves daily without being informed, control ourselves daily without being alerted, respect ourselves without being obliged, enlighten and educate ourselves daily without being taught. We are leaders in our community for healthy bodies and healthy minds so as to reach the harmonious humanity in our society.” Practicing and living by Shaolin teachings will eventually allow us to do these things subconsciously, like performing Kungfu naturally as if it has always been a part of us. In the words of our Shifu with regards to leadership “It is very challenging, especially in this society today”. We all have busy lives, whether it be finishing college, high school, or grade school. Working long hours for a major company, running a family business, traveling for business, caring for your children or parents and helping family members. Somehow through all of this we all still find the time to train and also provide leadership to other members of the school. We all have unique qualities and traits that we can use to help the school move in the right direction. In other areas we must work hard to hone our capabilities. Some may be shy and not very outspoken, while others are very outgoing from day one. If we work together as a family and through leadership all weaknesses can be overcome. Read Full »

Good leaders are made, not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. What makes a person want to follow a leader? People want to be guided by those they respect and who have a clear sense of direction. To gain respect, they must be ethical. A sense of direction is achieved by conveying a strong vision of the future. Kung-fu trains our bodies and minds to produce a positive energy and inner strength which in turn brings calmness and inner peace and a balance between body and mind. Only when we care for others’ well being with a good hearts are we trusted as good leaders. Leaders must establish efficient communication so that we will congregate all the people together.”Qi or chi is the source of everything, the building block of all things. Human beings are made of living cells. When we look into each cell, we see a membrane, the nucleus and so on. Chi – the life force energy which flows through the pathways of all living forms – in order to maintain health and wellness, mentally, physically and emotionally. With this teaching in Kung-fu strengthen our Chi we can move others to do great things in life to empower others in a positive way.
Individual School News
This past quarter at the New Orleans school has shown improvement due to growth and student dedication. To help reward younger students, the staff hosted a Kung Fu Panda party. After a Saturday class, the kids gathered around to watch a movie while snacking on popcorn and other treats. Meanwhile, parents with questions were invited to speak with instructors about any concerns or curiosities they might have with their child’s classes. We look forward to more of these in the future.
Students of all ages had fun dressing up in Halloween costumes on October 28 for the school’s Halloween Party! Decorating gave students a wonderful backdrop for pictures—spooky graveyard, cobwebs, etc. Here are some photos from the party.

The gang…

2012 is shaping up to be an eventful year. The Shaolin Institute of New Orleans will host the next Art of War (Extreme Sanda) fight competition and a Shaolin Legacy show. The events will take place in April and June respectively. Each Saturday after training, leadership members from both the New Orleans and the Thibodaux locations meet for planning sessions.
Hats off to those who participated in Quarterly testing on October 1, 2011
Next up for us is a holiday party, and then we’re looking forward to another wonderful quarter!
Hello from Mobile! We are all so happy and relieved with the cooler fall weather!
It’s been a good and busy summer here on the Mobile campus. We had two demos, one at Bel Air Mall to celebrate the birthday of the Mobile Police Department’s mascot “McGruff” a big shaggy dog who “takes a bite out of crime.” We took advantage of the happening to have our own party for our student Belinda Munoz whose birthday is the same day as McGruff’s. She was very surprised over the unexpected cake and gift.
New students joining the Shaolin Family this quarter include: Lee Arron Klosterman, brother and sister Noah and Violet Monroe, Dad and daughters Will, Tori and Chloe Fernandez, sisters Jewel Carty and Zana Rae Hanson, brothers Nick and Noah Prophet, Thad Perry, James Lewis, Mark Dunaway and returning warrior Josh Beech. Welcome everyone!
Quarterly testing was held on September 30. We promoted 56 students to higher sashes and stripes. Their floor work was beautiful. Testing went very smoothly this quarter; to everyone’s surprise we were finished well before the scheduled time.
We are planning a Kung Fu Panda movie party for November for our kids and their friends. The standard fair of games, pizza and movie are on tap. We expect screams of delight when we bring out water balloons with teacher Da Shi Xiong as the target!
Speaking of Da Shi Xiong, we celebrated his 1st Anniversary here in the US and Mobile with a surprise party with cake and banners and lots of love and good wishes. Thank you Da Shi Xiong for all you do.
Annual Greater Gulf State’s Fair and The Mobile International Festival are fast approaching. We’ll be manning booths and giving demos and having our mascots parade at both. We’re hoping that we successfully bring home many VIP slips of potential new students.
We wish our LIU Family the Happiest Holiday Season!

These past few months have been extremely busy for Atlanta and we have participated in several demonstrations and are preparing our team for the Trip to Nashville!!
During the last two months we participated in a Chinatown Fall Festival and the Gateway International Festival! The demonstration team did an amazing job and both of our performances received high approval ratings from those who viewed both of our events! In October we also had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate our October Birthdays as well as have a photo shoot with some of our students here at the school.
For the next two months of this year we plan on having our November Birthday party on the Nov. 19th at noon and to watch a Kungfu movie at the school as part of our celebration! This year’s Christmas Party will be held on 12/16/2011 at 6pm. This will be a celebration of the holiday season and of all of our December Birthdays.
